Out-Of-Network (OON)
Depending on your out-of-network benefits, you may qualify for partial or full reimbursement of your session fees from your insurance company. Your therapist can provide what is called a “superbill” that you can use to submit a claim for reimbursement. If you are interested, you can contact your insurance company to determine whether this is an option for you.
Benefits of Self-Pay Services
It’s understandable that you would want to use your insurance coverage. You invested in the coverage and you want to get the most out of it. And at the same time, there’s a chance you’ve also experienced frustration with your insurance company and your coverage.
When you pay for therapy directly, your insurance company does not retain any of your confidential health information related to your mental health treatment, including diagnoses. Plus, because self-pay therapy services aren’t dependent on a diagnosis for billing, a diagnosis may not be necessary. And lastly, when therapists receive their full fee for the services they provide, they are better able to deliver premium, high-quality services to their clients.
