Therapy for Moms

Motherhood can be so rewarding. It’s a privilege to be a mom, of course it is. And you wouldn’t trade it for the world. But none of that matters when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed. The truth is, being a mom is hard as hell sometimes.

You always wanted to be a mom, but this isn’t what you had in mind.

When you dreamed of becoming a mom, you didn’t imagine this frazzled, emotional version of yourself. You’ve always had success in other parts of your life, and you assumed this would be no different. But it turns out, no amount of love and hard work seems enough.

Feeling like you’re not good enough is a common feeling among my clients. In fact, a big driver of mom guilt and burnout is the meaning and shame around being a “bad mom”.

My clients struggle to stay calm when parenting, and they often feel like their discipline strategies are useless. They resort to yelling or punishment out of desperation, and the resulting mom guilt doesn’t do their mental health any favors. They also worry (like a lot), especially about how close their family is and what to do about it.

Before they come to therapy, they are basically burning out.

Is therapy right for you?

If any of this resonates (and you live in Pennsylvania), then you are in the right place. Here are some things to consider.

Therapy may be for you if:

  • You feel really stressed when your child acts out.
  • Despite trying not to, you keep yelling at your child.
  • You sometimes feel like you can’t connect with your child because of their behavior.
  • You blame yourself constantly for the state of things, and you worry a lot.
  • Your relationships are strained because of what you’re going through.
  • Some unresolved stuff from your past is getting triggered.
  • You feel like you’ve lost yourself in the chaos.

Investing in yourself, getting the life you want.

Taking good care of yourself, raising little humans, and actually enjoying the job from time to time takes a bit of work.

Healing old wounds, rewiring things that don’t serve you anymore, retooling inherited parenting methods, and strengthening current relationships, are all part of the process. And that process takes time and effort to work through.

BUT – it’s totally possible! Even though it requires some work, I want you to know, that it’s SO worth it. In fact, it’s not only worth it, but it’s satisfying, empowering, and inspiring.

You will have a plan, you will have tools you can really use, and you will feel in control of your life. And most importantly, you will know how to prioritize your needs so you can feel better.

What Will Therapy Be Like?

Whether this is your first time coming to therapy, or you are curious about my approach, this section will give you a sense of what you can expect in therapy.

When we meet for your initial session, we will spend time reviewing your intake paperwork so I can get a clear understanding of your current concerns. I will ask you some questions about you, your family, your background, and your current needs. Although this info helps me complete a thorough clinical assessment that will inform our work together, it will feel conversational and at a pace that works for you.

I love working with clients who are ready to tackle their unresolved stuff and start working on getting the life they want. I will get curious with you, share observations, and challenge your thinking from time to time. It can be vulnerable work but you are in the driver’s seat. The pacing and deep dives are up to you. Share what you feel comfortable sharing, I will follow your lead.

Once we know what you want to work on, and once I have a clear sense of you and your story, we will dive into things like self-exploration, skill-building, and actionable strategies. We will decide the mode of therapy that will be most helpful. This might include individual therapy, expressive arts activities, regular family therapy sessions, or group therapy.

Whatever road map we create, you will have a say in where we go. Therapy with me is a collaboration, and I can’t wait to be your guide.

If you are still deciding whether to start therapy, just remember –  healing takes time, and you’re totally worth the investment.
